Mary Poppins

February 22, 2010

Mary Poppins is a wonderful and magical Broadway show that has made its stop at Gammage here in Tempe, Arizona. The show is a full Broadway show including special tricks, show-stopping musical performances and things that will have you leaving the show in awe.

Almost all of the songs in Mary Poppins should be familiar to those who have seen the motion picture that the musical is based on. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is one of the most well-known songs in the show. This part of the musical is fun to watch because while they are singing the song, they are spelling out the word and also spelling each letter with their bodies in some way. The fast pace song makes it fun to watch as each character spells the crazy long word that can mean, well, whatever you want it to.  Step In Time is also an incredible song that features the chimney sweeps in a fast paced, fun tap-dancing song. And also includes Bert tap-dancing across the proscenium arch. Yes, he dances upside down.

The touring cast has some familiar faces to the Mary Poppins production including Gavin Lee, the original Bert in both the London Cast and Broadway Cast. A few others, including Mary Poppins herself, Caroline Sheen, have performed on Broadway in the same show. The cast performed flawlessly on the Gammage stage and performed to the highest degree portraying their characters the way they should be played.

The set is quite an impressive piece. The house folds out, like a pop-out book. The house looks like a doll house; with stairs and all. And the set move on tracks, sliding into place. The scene changes are also done nicely, having Bert, one of the lead characters, sometimes pretending to be the one changing the scene. At one point a curtain is released, and Bert blows on it making it appear that he is the reason it is disappearing into the stage left wings.

The one flaw of this show would be the time length. It is a great family show but even I was beginning to drift in and out of watching it at one point. And that doesn’t mean much to the little boy falling asleep in the chair right next to me. If you have children, I strongly recommend not bringing them to a weekday show, but rather to a matinee show on the weekend. The show just feels like it is dragging along towards the middle, but it will certainly pick up and the best effects occurring at the end (I will not mention what these are because I do not want to risk ruining the surprise for anyone).

Mary Poppins goes until February 28, 2010 at Gammage. Don’t miss this wonderful musical that is great for all ages!

Valentine’s Day

February 15, 2010

Valentine's Day poster

Valentine’s Day is a romantic movie that hits almost every bump of  a relationship. The movie follows 10 different story lines, with all different types of characters. The movie features  these 10 different people and show how they all are connected on this Valentine’s Day. Some are pretty obvious story plots while some others will surprise you. The star-studded cast does a fantastic job with all their different roles, except Taylor Swift. I am not sure whether her character is meant to come off as annoying as she does, but Taylor Swift’s parts are ones that you wish would be shorter to leave more time for the others.

It’s a very heartwarming movie and whether you are in a relationship or not, you will still walk out with a smile on your face!

TRAILER

Trailer Watch

February 10, 2010

Alice in Wonderland, coming out March 4, released a long trailer not long ago. In theatres you can view this trailer in 3-D, the way that the movie can be viewed. This is a movie that doesn’t appear to be one to miss. The trailer sucks you in to the strange world right from the beginning. And also does a good job of making the viewer understand that this isn’t the normal  story of Alice in Wonderland where she falls into the rabbit hole and behinds her journey, meeting all the wonderfully crazy characters along the way. Nope, this is another story. A different book. Although I have never read it I can understand by watching the trailer that Alice has been to Wonderland before and she is returning to find that Wonderland has been taking over by the Red Queen, played by Helena Bonham Carter. The White Queen, played by Anne Hathaway, is a character I am unfamiliar with but seems to be a crucial part. Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter, a great role for him, although his make-up and hair is beyond crazy. This movie will hopefully be a fun movie to watch and the graphics will hopefully take the viewer straight to Wonderland!

Take a look for yourself.

Up in the Air

February 8, 2010

Up in the Air is one of the ten films nominated for the Academy Awards this year, just announced last week. The film stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, who lives his life “in the air”.  His job requires him to fly from city to city firing workers from their jobs when their boss is not able to do it themselves. Ryan Bingham lives a routine life, knowing exactly how to get around an airport as quickly as possible. His dating and marriage views seem to resemble Mr. Clooney’s own life pretty well, giving him an easy character to portray. Anna Kendrick joins as Natalie Keener, a young woman with bright ideas for the future of the company. What she doesnt know is how the work is done and joins Ryan and he travels to fire others. She soon learns that everything cannot be done electronically, that some things are better to be done face to face.

This movie has an amazing script and was shot perfectly. The casting was right on, each person was able to hold their own on screen and not be out shone by anyone. The only problem to me was that it was not a feel good movie by the end. You do not walk out of the theater with a giant smile on your face thinking, “Wow that put me in such a great mood.” But don’t let that stop you from enjoying the rest of this movie, it truly is one to see.
